Caring for your Brendan Joseph pieces
All of our luxury silk scarves, shawls, bow ties, neckties and pocket squares are created from the finest natural fibres of silk, linen and cashmere. This means that some variations in colour and yarn composition may occur. For example, in our linen and silk shawls, there may be a bit of flax that is still attached to the fibre. Rather than seeing this as a flaw, we invite you to see it as a beautiful addition, a reminder of where these beautiful pieces originated.
Below, you will find the best ways to care for your Brendan Joseph pieces, so they can be enjoyed by generations to come.
Scarves
If unsure, dry clean only, or contact the studio directly with a particular concern.
Machine Wash 30-degrees (cold) enclosed in a pillow case
Dry flat. If tumble-drying, only dry to 20% remaining wetness, then iron to finish. Do not line-dry hand-dyed pieces as they will develop fold marks.
Shawls
Our linen and silk shawls are inspired by the dance of light on water. In order to achieve this special reflective quality, we have kept the weave structure on these pieces very loose. Be careful when wearing jewellery, as this can snag the fibres.
Because we have used natural, unbleached, linen in this loose weave, moisture will make the fabric relax, and contract, creating beautiful waves. If you prefer to keep your shawl smooth, simply iron on the linen side, and your shawl will become flat once again.
If you spill something on your shawl, it can be gently spot cleaned with a damp cloth, or you can handwash with a drop of fabric softener. It is crucial that the shawl not be squeezed or stretched during washing. Dry flat with plenty of air, to allow the fabric to breathe.
For best results, we recommend dry cleaning.
Ties
Ties can only be dry-cleaned. If there’s a mark or stain, dab it or blot it with a baby-wipe until the stain is removed. Only ‘rub in’ or ‘blend’ the stain, when you’re confident you can’t get any more out. Bow-ties are a little easier to care for in that you can iron them and steam them, but you can not machine wash either ties or bow-ties.
